THREE TREES

  'DIALOGUE'.
Speak to the trees. The lights will go on, and the trees will respond. By talking or breathing to the CO2 sensor placed on the stand in the middle of the platform,  the visitor can activate lights and the measuring chambers attached to the branches of the trees. the process can be activated when the light in sensor is green. The decrease of CO2 in the measuring chambers, caused by photosynthesis and the leaves, is audible as a whistling sound. Lights, sound, CO2 digital and analogue technology, and biochemical processes within the plant and the fewer former circuit, where each part of information is in  relation and dependent upon the others. In the process of photosynthesis carbon dioxide is converted into sugars and other organic compounds. Nearly all life depends of that since this either directly or indirectly as the ultimate source of energy and food. The photosynthesis is also essential for maintaining the normal level of oxygen in the atmosphere. As we breathe out or release carbon dioxide into the sphere, photosynthesis organisms can fix it, releasing oxygen as a byproduct. The interaction between  species is thus physical, as our bodies are parts in the same metabolism.

 'TREE PIECE.'
Three tress are stretched between the sky and the earth, begin held in tension owing to the water they evaporate. Their diameter slowly expands and contracts according to the prevailing conditions of light and activity. The change of their measures in this consent yet visible tension alters the pitch of the sound.

Finland presents to sell exhibitions under the heading Fallen Trees; Terike Haapoja  in the Nordic Pavilion and one of Antti Laitien in the Finnish Aalto Pavilion.  true to its title, the exhibition revisits a dramatic event at the 2011 be a  Venice biennial,  the abrupt falling of a large tree that left  the Finnish  Pavilion severely damage, and effectively closed ahead of its time.  as this as a starting point, Fallen Trees  assesses our relationship with nature  three multiple means of re-enactment and repetition. Terike Haapoja Challenges us to ponder police of profound questions the limits to the centrality of the human subject with a nature, the role of technology in shaping our world view. Haapoja  has converted the pavilion into a research laboratory,  dialogue between art, natural science and environmental ethics. Antti Laitinen offers multiple stories about qualities of human endeavours. His art reveals fascinating tragicomedy embedded in a relationship with nature. I throughly liked the Finish Pavilion when visiting the 2013 Venice Biennial, as the interest and concentration within the natural world and the importance it has is fascinating. The deconstruction of the tree and then placed back in its original state, to form a kind of tree puzzle, inspires feelings of human power over nature, the effect and the destruction we can create, yet also the encouragement and growth we can give back to nature. http://www.myartguides.com/venice-art-biennale-2013/art-biennale/national-participations/item/403-finland-nordic-pavilon

SETTLING IN

Finished set up in the studio. plugged in the film and works well and on a loop, and i stuffed the fish with the items from home and looks full, even quite fat which fits in with the unnatural lifestyle its representing. I tried ideas after seeing it fully set up of making it seem more like a bedroom, as well as having the remote and controller set to look like the fish is playing playstation, I tried the posters on the walls, books etc...but it didn't work and looked to busy and explanatory. The good news as well is that i don't have to bring in the fish until the day of the exhibition and the assessment on friday, so they will only be in the studio for an evening and i will stand with them during the exhibition to ensure no body sits on them or the water doesn't flow out. i have also rented a circuit breaker, which plugs into the TV to ensure that if the water does accidentally spill out onto the electrical equipment the power will shut off and the water won't become harmful or give anyone standing near the water an electric shock.

COME ON IN

looking at things in my room that make it obviously a bedroom. I might take some of my photos and replace the faces with fish, and the 'Lost in Translation' poster. maybe not the fashion poster, although i like the look of books pilled next to each other and maybe some cook books.

BEDDINGS THE BEST

Got together some bedding, a pillow, sleeping bag and quilt to use as padding and stuffing from my room i think would work to fill the fish with.

SIMPLE PLEASURES

I have tried to make the film look as much like a music video as possible, adding little extras to the beginning and end of the film.

TAKE TWO...SAME OLD SONG AND DANCE

Finally found a website that helped me convert my iMovie into a DVD format that can be played out of a DVD player. I shared the film from iMovie into iTunes, then downloaded a program called Aimersoft Video Converter Ultimate. i dragged the completed film into the converter section, converted it from a MV4 file into a compatible MOV file, then saved this under documents, dragged it into the burn section.

Looking at every possible website to help me convert iMovie to DVD format.

SUGAR AND SPICE AND ALL THINGS NICE

I brought the fish some handy treats to keep them safe and secure in the inflatables at tooting market. Firstly the Nutrafin Aqua + Water Conditioner, very important as it is a 'stress reducing formula' made to 'make tap water safe for fish', 'removes chlorine and chloramine,' and 'neutralises heavy metals.' Secondly, Supa Oxygenating Tablets which will 'slowly dissolve and oxygen will be released into the water.' And finally, Supa Weekend Fish Food. 'Supa weekend fish food block dissolves slowly and neutralises the aquarium water as well as releasing food particles.' lucky fish.

GAME BOY

disaster. i went to hire out a TV, DVD player and speakers and unfortunately they were completely out of stock. luckily i have a very nice room mate whom allowed me to borrow his TV, PS3 and console which works perfectly. i just have to burn my disc and try it out. i like the idea as well of having the fish placed next to the console looking like he's playing a video game, another addition to the unnatural word my fish is satirising.

COUCH POTATO

Setting up the exhibitor in the studio. i have decided after seeing it in position that it works best with only one stool, and i want to stuff the fish to make him seem more lifelike, as the deflated look didn't particularly work and comments from other students overdid the design it defiantly looks better with stuffing. This won't change the idea of the fake fish though, as he will still be representing the unnatural behaviour of the human by sitting slouched watching a TV.

GOT TO GIVE IT GAYE

looking at music to potentially place with the film. as i want to show the unnatural within the natural world, yet satirically, i want to pick a song that is fun and entertaining. what could be better then Marvin Gaye, 'Got to Give it Up.' this is also a relevant song to choose, as there has been a dispute about the song being taken and used within the recent hit 'Blurred Lines,' a song which has angered the general public,  and has actually being banned from many student unions across the country after  allegations the song is sexist and has references to rape. I think it would be ironic to to show fish dancing and singing to a song that has influenced such a controversial song amongst humans.

TAKE ONE...NONE STOP FISH

I have been experimenting with creating a film showing the fish swimming around on a looped film which will be within the set up of the sitting room arrangement. i want to have to fish in the chairs, whilst the animated fake fish sits on the chair watching the TV, showing the film of the real fish. The idea is to mimic human behaviour, playing on the idea of unnatural vs the natural.

GOGGLE BOX

The Channel 4 Program 'Goggle Box' is a program watching people watch TV, to see their reactions to things they see on the screen. The idea of watching people on the screen whilst we watch them is the continuos repetitive circle. Similarly behind the idea of 'Goggle Box,' i want the set up of the fish watching the TV to come across as humorous more then anything, as well as pairing the unnatural and natural.

GETTING COMFY

trying out different ways of presenting the work. i haven't completely blown up the stool/chair so its not looking to its full potential, but i wont to have the chair with the stool in front in a living room position. i then wont the fish slightly collapsed next to and on the chair to seem like its sitting on it, yet keeping the deflated/lifeless look. i have though also about potentially having a TV facing the chair, playing a looped film of the fish swimming in the tank. the set up would make a proper sitting room arrangement, humorously mimicking a humans living room, instead of humans watching humans on TV, it would be fish watching fish. the lifelessness of the fake fish reflecting the humans behaviour when watching TV. even though there is life all around, (symboled by the live fish in the chair) the fish is choosing to watch the recorded fish on the screen. be interesting to see if the viewer watches the screen or is more interested in the live fish inside the chair.

SWIMMING IN CIRCLES

I have placed the fish inside the stool, Aside from the poor images you can see the size of the fish in comparison to the cylinder, which isnt as bad as i thought it would be. the stool is holding nicely with the water inside.

TRIAL AND FAIL

Tried to fill the entire stool with water. annoyingly didn't work, and completely collapsed on itself loosing all the water and its shape. I will patch up the hole i made with the strong PVC glue again, and try placing the fish inside the center part only.

PLANT AND THE PLASTIC

I experimented blowing up the outside if the stool to see if the the air was leaking out of the hole i patched up, and low and behold its worked. although as i blew it up, the air was sucked completely out of the central cylinder. thinking that this meant it wouldn't hold water, this proved an issue and i was thinking of ways to hold it open perhaps with a sheet of plastic made into a cylinder. After this deliberation i just filled the cylinder with water and, logically, the part was kept nicely rounded and i was able to fit inside a plant that will help oxygenate the water, as well as the oxygenating pills i have. the part with the water inside is rather small, i might make a small hole to see if i could fill the entire blow up stool, although not sure if this will hold itself up. i will experiment, as i would like the fish to have as much room as possible. i might cut the plant down so that it fits better, as you can see its rather large for the gap, especially as that has to also contain a fish.

MADE FOR THE PARTY

Hannah Höch, one of the most important collage artists of the 20th century, now has her work exhibiting at the White Chapel Gallery. she experimented with the use of pattern cuts, influenced form her time spent studying art and fashion, exploring the notion of abstraction, and what art could do. The exhibition begins looking at the stages of art around the time of Hitlers war, the rebellious Dada period, the terror and pressure felt by Europe, which involved the main political, harsher collages. These colleges Höch collaborated with other members of the Dada group such as Raoul Hausmann, present angry statements ridiculing political powers, the state of the economy, the notion of industry and the military. As well as this, Höch also played with the idea of beauty and what society and the individual relate to as beautiful. and These works at the end of the exhibition showed beautiful, colourful, more relaxed pictures. In contrast to the beginning works, they aren't defined by a particular statement or a deliberate powerful subject matter. They are playful and provide hope and  allow a release from the past and enter into a new and positive era. 'There has always been fantastic art. Particularly in times of internal and external upheaval.' The imaginative and creativity of the pictures are incredibly inspiring, making me want to return to looking at the imagination and peoples fantasies and the surreal. The mix between the known and unknown, the natural and illusion creates these vibrant and engaging pieces. They have made me aware of the colours i am using in my piece, the contrast between the orange fish and the strong bold orange of the fake deflated fish, against the watery blues of the inflatables. http://www.whitechapelgallery.org/exhibitions/hannah-hch

AND THE OTHER WORLD TURNS OUT TO BE THIS ONE

Painter, sculpture, poet Mira Schendel has just finished exhibiting at the Tate Modern. I liked the soft sculptor she presented using fishing wire, rice paper as sheets sewn together, and twisted to make connecting knots. she uses similar materials in her works, all similar colours and tones, copper, ochre, bronze, whites and creams, all very delicate and fragile. The rice paper hanging presenting lettering, both cut out and drawn on, although not spelling real words, which i find particularly charming. Scendel writes "The back of transparency lies in front of you...and the 'other world' turns out to be this one." 'http://www.tate.org.uk/download/file/fid/31299 The still lives at the beginning of the exhibition show influence from Paul Klee and Giorgio Morandi. The simplicity of her work is beautiful and relaxing. http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2013/sep/29/mira-schendel-tate-modern-review
