GOGGLE BOX

The Channel 4 Program 'Goggle Box' is a program watching people watch TV, to see their reactions to things they see on the screen. The idea of watching people on the screen whilst we watch them is the continuos repetitive circle. Similarly behind the idea of 'Goggle Box,' i want the set up of the fish watching the TV to come across as humorous more then anything, as well as pairing the unnatural and natural.

GETTING COMFY

trying out different ways of presenting the work. i haven't completely blown up the stool/chair so its not looking to its full potential, but i wont to have the chair with the stool in front in a living room position. i then wont the fish slightly collapsed next to and on the chair to seem like its sitting on it, yet keeping the deflated/lifeless look. i have though also about potentially having a TV facing the chair, playing a looped film of the fish swimming in the tank. the set up would make a proper sitting room arrangement, humorously mimicking a humans living room, instead of humans watching humans on TV, it would be fish watching fish. the lifelessness of the fake fish reflecting the humans behaviour when watching TV. even though there is life all around, (symboled by the live fish in the chair) the fish is choosing to watch the recorded fish on the screen. be interesting to see if the viewer watches the screen or is more interested in the live fish inside the chair.

SWIMMING IN CIRCLES

I have placed the fish inside the stool, Aside from the poor images you can see the size of the fish in comparison to the cylinder, which isnt as bad as i thought it would be. the stool is holding nicely with the water inside.

TRIAL AND FAIL

Tried to fill the entire stool with water. annoyingly didn't work, and completely collapsed on itself loosing all the water and its shape. I will patch up the hole i made with the strong PVC glue again, and try placing the fish inside the center part only.

PLANT AND THE PLASTIC

I experimented blowing up the outside if the stool to see if the the air was leaking out of the hole i patched up, and low and behold its worked. although as i blew it up, the air was sucked completely out of the central cylinder. thinking that this meant it wouldn't hold water, this proved an issue and i was thinking of ways to hold it open perhaps with a sheet of plastic made into a cylinder. After this deliberation i just filled the cylinder with water and, logically, the part was kept nicely rounded and i was able to fit inside a plant that will help oxygenate the water, as well as the oxygenating pills i have. the part with the water inside is rather small, i might make a small hole to see if i could fill the entire blow up stool, although not sure if this will hold itself up. i will experiment, as i would like the fish to have as much room as possible. i might cut the plant down so that it fits better, as you can see its rather large for the gap, especially as that has to also contain a fish.

MADE FOR THE PARTY

Hannah Höch, one of the most important collage artists of the 20th century, now has her work exhibiting at the White Chapel Gallery. she experimented with the use of pattern cuts, influenced form her time spent studying art and fashion, exploring the notion of abstraction, and what art could do. The exhibition begins looking at the stages of art around the time of Hitlers war, the rebellious Dada period, the terror and pressure felt by Europe, which involved the main political, harsher collages. These colleges Höch collaborated with other members of the Dada group such as Raoul Hausmann, present angry statements ridiculing political powers, the state of the economy, the notion of industry and the military. As well as this, Höch also played with the idea of beauty and what society and the individual relate to as beautiful. and These works at the end of the exhibition showed beautiful, colourful, more relaxed pictures. In contrast to the beginning works, they aren't defined by a particular statement or a deliberate powerful subject matter. They are playful and provide hope and  allow a release from the past and enter into a new and positive era. 'There has always been fantastic art. Particularly in times of internal and external upheaval.' The imaginative and creativity of the pictures are incredibly inspiring, making me want to return to looking at the imagination and peoples fantasies and the surreal. The mix between the known and unknown, the natural and illusion creates these vibrant and engaging pieces. They have made me aware of the colours i am using in my piece, the contrast between the orange fish and the strong bold orange of the fake deflated fish, against the watery blues of the inflatables. http://www.whitechapelgallery.org/exhibitions/hannah-hch

AND THE OTHER WORLD TURNS OUT TO BE THIS ONE

Painter, sculpture, poet Mira Schendel has just finished exhibiting at the Tate Modern. I liked the soft sculptor she presented using fishing wire, rice paper as sheets sewn together, and twisted to make connecting knots. she uses similar materials in her works, all similar colours and tones, copper, ochre, bronze, whites and creams, all very delicate and fragile. The rice paper hanging presenting lettering, both cut out and drawn on, although not spelling real words, which i find particularly charming. Scendel writes "The back of transparency lies in front of you...and the 'other world' turns out to be this one." 'http://www.tate.org.uk/download/file/fid/31299 The still lives at the beginning of the exhibition show influence from Paul Klee and Giorgio Morandi. The simplicity of her work is beautiful and relaxing. http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2013/sep/29/mira-schendel-tate-modern-review
